For vintners, the varietals they produce are largely dictated by their latitude and longitude, and this is especially true in California's wine country. Pinot Noir grows along the coast due to its love for fog-draped nights and brisk sea breeze.
We are tasting three promising Pinots that are sure to stop you in your tracks.
Fess Parker's 2009 take on this varietal is velvety in texture, with flavors of black fruit, nutmeg, mocha, vanilla and forest floor.
Gundlach Bundschu's 2009 Pinot has juicy flavors of black plum and Bing cherries laced with dried rose petal, cardamom and ceylon tea.
The 2010 Hahn blend has bright red berry fruit on the nose and palate, a superlative example of a Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir.
We'll share some tasty morsels as we taste these wines and discuss what drives Pinot lovers and producers to obsession with this mysterious grape. We'll discuss the history of each vineyard, and give an introduction to each of their winemakers and their individual philosophies.
You'll have an opportunity to explore these wines in a new way, as you expand your palate, by smelling separate components such as cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom so that you are better able to identify these aromas in each wine.
We will also talk about some perfect pairing partners for Pinot.
This class will be held in the Private Dining Room at the beautiful Pelagia Trattoria located at International Mall inside the Renaissance Hotel.

I share the European view that inviting virtually any wine to the table should be like inviting a dear friend over who never provokes performance anxiety, compliments the food no matter what is being served, and, simply by being there, elevates your pleasure throughout a meal." Andrea Robinson, Master Sommelier
I remember my first wine job, just like it was yesterday. I walked into a new boutique wine store not too far from my home, and I was hooked. Complete with wood floors and shelving, cool leather lounge chairs, a long tasting table where wine and glasses beckoned and welcomed you to 'trust your taste,' and so many bottles of all sorts of wine I had never seen or heard of before. As if that wasn't enough, I was greeted warmly by Jay, who I almost immediately determined knew more about wine than I would ever forget. I was truly a goner.
It's been an interesting ride since those early Cork & Olive days. In the past eight years, my wine life has taken me from Home Wine Tasting Guide, to store Manager to restaurant Sommelier. I spent some time studying at the International Sommelier Guild. Even after all this time, the words 'trust your taste' still resonate with me. I don't want to TELL you what to drink. I want to share what I have been drinking and cooking and inspire you to try everything so that you can 'trust YOUR taste.'
Wine should be fun, and easy. Wine should be paired with food for maximum enjoyment. Wine should be shared with friends (new and old). Wine and food pairing is an experiment, you can't just read about it, you have to get in there and do it.
That is why I am presenting a series of wine discovery tastings.
Cheers!

Why blog? To share and perhaps inspire. In short, I drink, I cook, I eat, and I share. It's a pretty easy formula designed for maximum fun and enjoyment. If my blog inspires you to try a new wine, or create a tasty dish, or explore a new pairing, then I have accomplished exactly what I set out to do.
